Role Description
The Assistant Bursar is a full-time, on-site role based at Kansanga Hill Primary School in Kampala. The successful candidate will support the Bursar in the day-to-day financial operations of the school, ensuring that financial transactions are accurately recorded, processed, and reported in accordance with the school’s financial policies and relevant statutory requirements.
Key responsibilities include preparing invoices and receipts for school fees and other income; maintaining accurate pupils’ ledgers; posting fee payments and other transactions into the accounting system; managing petty cash; preparing monthly bank reconciliation statements; processing payment vouchers, journal entries, bank withdrawals, and cheque payments; assisting with monthly payroll; and preparing statutory returns, including PAYE, Withholding Tax, and NSSF.
The Assistant Bursar will also support the preparation of monthly management reports, termly budgets, cash-flow statements, annual financial statements, and annual audits. The role includes responding professionally to fee-related inquiries, safeguarding financial information, ensuring compliance with school financial policies, and performing any other duties assigned by the Bursar or school management.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of a Diploma in Accounting, Commerce (Accounting Option), Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least two years’ experience in a similar accounting or finance role; experience in an educational institution is an added advantage.
- Progress toward or completion of CPA Level I or higher is an added advantage.
- Good knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), financial reporting principles, Ugandan taxation, and statutory compliance requirements, including PAYE, Withholding Tax, and NSSF.
- Experience in maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and preparing financial reports.
- Ability to prepare and interpret bank reconciliations, payment vouchers, journal entries, budgets, cash-flow statements, and financial reports.
- Knowledge of school fee structures, pupil account management, fee collection, and payment tracking is an added advantage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and accounting software.
- Strong analytical, budgeting, financial planning, numerical, and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with parents, guardians, staff, and other stakeholders.
- High integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and reliability in handling financial information and cash transactions.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team in a busy school environment.
