Background

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), in collaboration with Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, is implementing the Scaling the Optimal Use of Multiple ACTs to Prevent Antimalarial Drug Resistance (STOP-AMDR) Project.

The project works closely with the Ministry of Health’s National Malaria Elimination Division and other stakeholders to generate evidence for introducing and scaling up multiple first-line therapies in Uganda. It will conduct a molecular surveillance study to determine the prevalence and distribution of molecular markers of antimalarial drug resistance.

MakSPH seeks two Clinicians to support data and sample collection from malaria cases at participating health facilities. The project requires one Lusamia speaker and one Luganda speaker.

Responsibilities

  • Screen and enrol eligible malaria patients, collect clinical and study information, support sample handling and facilitate malaria case management at participating health facilities.
  • Screen patients and determine their eligibility for study enrolment according to the approved protocol.
  • Explain study procedures and obtain written informed consent and assent where applicable.
  • Collect complete and accurate demographic, clinical and study information using approved tools.
  • Label, document and temporarily store study samples before handing them over for transport.
  • Provide or facilitate malaria case management according to national treatment guidelines, regardless of study participation.
  • Protect participant confidentiality and comply with ethical requirements, Good Clinical Practice and the approved protocol.
  • Document and report protocol deviations and other study-related concerns to the Molecular Team Supervisor.
  • Participate in training, meetings, monitoring visits and quality-assurance activities.

Qualifications and Desirable Qualities

  • Minimum of a diploma in Clinical Medicine.
  • Full registration with the relevant professional council and a valid practising licence in Uganda.
  • At least one year of clinical experience, preferably in malaria case management, infectious diseases or health research.
  • Previous experience in clinical research, participant enrolment, informed consent and study documentation provides an added advantage.
  • Competence in patient assessment.
  • Good communication, interpersonal, organisational and teamwork skills.
  • Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and electronic data-capture systems.
  • Valid certification in Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection.
  • Ability to speak Lusamia or Luganda, according to the position selected.
  • Commitment to participant confidentiality, study protocols and flexible working arrangements.
