Job Title: General Ledger Financial Supervisor
Location: Nakaseke District&Kampala, Uganda
Reports to: Finance Manager
Employment Type: Full-time
Role Purpose
The General Ledger Financial Supervisor oversees the full spectrum of General Ledger functions, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial records and reporting. This role manages month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, reviews reconciliations, ensures compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Ugandan statutory requirements, and supervises the finance team to maintain strong internal controls and support business decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
1. General Ledger Operations & Closing
- Supervise all General Ledger activities, including journal entry reviews, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, ensuring all journal entries are posted accurately and within established deadlines.
- Review balance sheet schedules, ensuring proper accruals, provisions, and cut-off are recorded.
- Resolve discrepancies including suspense accounts and intercompany balances.
2. Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS and company policies.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards (IFRS) and internal financial policies.
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax agents during audits and statutory reviews.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of tax returns (VAT, Withholding Tax), NSSF, PAYE, and other statutory obligations.
- Ensure compliance with the Uganda Companies Act 2012 and Accountants Act 2013 financial reporting requirements.
3. Team Management & Development
- Supervise and guide finance team members (GL Accountants, Finance Officers), allocate tasks, and monitor deadlines.
- Support team development and training to build technical and professional capabilities.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to team members.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance team.
4. Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Strengthen internal controls and ensure proper documentation and audit trails are maintained.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
- Ensure the general ledger is accurately maintained and all accounts are fully reconciled and substantiated at all times.
- Safeguard the integrity of the chart of accounts and guide teams on appropriate GL account usage.
5. Reconciliation & Analysis
- Review and approve bank reconciliations, ensuring all discrepancies are resolved promptly.
- Perform profitability analysis, P&L reviews, and variance analysis to support management decision-making.
- Monitor and analyse financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Prepare and present financial reports to management with clear insights and recommendations.
6. Statutory & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all statutory filings (annual returns, financial statements) are submitted to the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) within required deadlines.
- Liaise with Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) on tax matters and ensure full compliance with tax regulations.
- Stay updated on changes in IFRS, Ugandan tax laws, and financial reporting requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Professional accounting certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
Experience:
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with a focus on General Ledger functions.
- At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or team lead role within Record-to-Report (R2R) or GL accounting.
- Proven experience in month-end closing, financial reporting, and reconciliations.
- Experience in the manufacturing, building materials, or logistics industry is highly desirable.
- Prior work experience in Uganda or East Africa is essential.
Language Requirement (Mandatory):
- Fluent in English (spoken and written) – must be able to prepare financial reports, communicate with auditors and regulators, and draft correspondence in English.
Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of IFRS and Ugandan financial reporting requirements.
- Strong understanding of the Uganda Companies Act 2012 and Accountants Act 2013.
- Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or similar) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Knowledge of tax regulations (VAT, Withholding Tax, PAYE, NSSF) and statutory compliance in Uganda.
- Experience with financial reporting and consolidation tools is an advantage.
Soft Skills:
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team management abilities.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in financial data.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with auditors, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks, and meet tight deadlines.

- High level of integrity, ethics, and confidentiality.
Other Requirements:
- Valid driving permit (for occasional off-site meetings with auditors or regulators).
- Willingness to work extended hours during month-end and year-end closing periods.
- Prior work experience in Uganda or East Africa is highly desirable.
